La Paz

I really had a very nice time in La Paz. Nice place to stay and people in cafes and restaurants were very friendly. Staying in a very nice little backpacker-oriented hotel in the old town helped as well. I and others will tell you that there are so many more facets to Bolivia than La Paz, although, if you go, make La Paz part of the experience. As for adventures, there is the old Highway of Death, now only used recreationally, to race down on a mountain bike, available from outfitters. There are jungle and desert (Altiplano) as well as mountains to visit and explore. For me, schedule driven as I was, La Paz had to be it and I am glad for not skipping it. A truly amazing city and an experience that is unique in many ways in South America.

So, on this fine day, after a great breakfast in the hotel, I walked on down the steep streets and alleys that lead one to the cernter of the city

It does get busy down there, but there is lots of protection, if you ever need it. I never did.

And before you kow it, there you are.

The square was even busier than normal because of some festival going on

The spectacular Basilica de San Francisco, whose statue graces the alcove above the main entrance

Back outside, away from the Basilica's contemplative silence, the entertainment continues. Kids test themselves on the climbing wall, cheered on by moms and siblings.
